Packing for the Big Move: Some Helpful Information

Packing can be a tedious, time-consuming chore. It takes skill and the right materials to prepare household articles for shipping.

We recommend you have us pack for you. We can pack in about one-fourth the time. We have the materials and we’re trained in proper procedures. Because we do it every day, we can do a better job.

But, if you decide to pack yourself, we want to help all we can. Here are some tips we’d like to share with you. Please ask your Carlos Moving Representative if you need more specific information.

Packing Tips

#1: You can buy the cartons you will need from us. We can help you choose the sizes you need. You’ll save valuable time trying to find suitable cartons at the supermarket and behind department stores.

#2: Wrap fragile articles the way professionals do. Use three layers of white paper per glass, dish, or what-have-you. Wrap firmly, but loosely enough to provide a cushioning effect.

#3: Don’t overcrowd boxes. Make sure each article will be cushioned from the other. Close the top of the box with slight pressure.

#4: Pack glasses standing on end, upside down, not on their sides. Stack dishes on one edge. Fill empty spaces with paper. Before packing china, glasses, etc., layer bottom of the box with crumpled paper.

#5: Pack mirrors, pictures, etc. in the right carton designed for them. Don’t mix. Pack clothing in our wardrobe boxes where they will hang straight, staying clean and pressed.

#6: Tape boxes both top and bottom. Seal every opening tight. We suggest plastic tape.

#7: Write the contents and room on the outside of each box.

#8: Don’t pack paints, turpentine, spray cans, cleaning fluids, ammunition, or any other flammable liquid or article. The law forbids movers to carry flammables. If you pack them and they cause a fire, you are liable—not the carrier. It’s too much of a risk. Make other arrangements for anything that could cause a fire.
